This structure patented in the late eighteenth
century and further developed
in the nineteenth century was used for
ledger binding. The Springback is a
robust structure, which allows the textblock
to lie flat when opened without
stressing the spine. The structure consists
of a hard hollow spine attached
to the textblock. The hard spine attachment
forces the textblock to raise
level when opened. This binding structure
is extremely useful for guest
books and lectern bibles. It is also
useful for writers who prefer a flat
surface for writing allowing full use
of the page.
