A Strange Place in Time, a trilogy by Alyx J. Shaw

For a thousand years, the Court of Hercandoloff protected the land, all the while having to keep themselves safe from grave evils. Using the magicks of the great mages of old, they guard the wells of magic, and struggle to survive, emerging only when they must. But times have changed. The evils have united, and the Court has become the hunted. Allies fall, and rumours spread that Takeshta the Lich-Queen has called home her most dread warrior, Rahklan the Damned, who is so feared not even those whom serves dare keep her close. The members of the Court have no choice but to reveal themselves to the evil. These walls are breeched, and the rats are coming in.

It’s almost more than one lost biker should have to deal with.

A Strange Place in Time:
Exploration into the world of the fantasy novel from typographical design to fine binding.

A Strange Place in Time: The Recalling of John Arrowsmith is the first book in a fantasy trilogy that chronicles the adventures of John Arrowsmith as he struggles to undertand how and why he came to be on Dargoth: a land of Elves and Dragons. Over the course of the winter, he comes to learn more and more about this strange land, and finds love with a mysterious Half-Elven man. But there is still one thing he needs to know - just why is he here?

The production of the first volume, A Strange Place in Time: The Recalling of John Arrowsmith, combined modern technologies and materials with traditional handwork to produce an edition of one hundred books. The book was digitally typeset using Adobe InDesign and laser printed on Cranes Crest soft white paper. The text face is Chaparral Pro. The illustrations were laser and letterpress printed using linoleum blocks to produce relief and reduction prints. The case bindings were full bound in Asahi crimson Japanese silk book cloth with handmade paper endsheets using a French groove style binding structure. The cover illustration onlay is a letterpress linocut relief printed on the printers’ handmade paper.

A Strange Place In Time: The Recalling of John Arrowsmith [212 pp, 5.5” x 8.5”] is available at $150, plus $5 shipping and handling for US addresses. International buyers please add $30 extra shipping per order. Please expect two weeks for delivery.

Unbound sheets for bookbinders $75.00

The saga continues in A Strange Place in Time: The White Palace Awakens, the second book of the trilogy. The White Palace arises, and so do questions. Is it really only there because the Talisman of Hercandoloff needs to be re-enchanted, or are there darker and older forces at work? And what of the strange happenings in the northern city of Kirianna, and at home in the barracks of the Warriors? The ruling city is being undermined, but with the list of enemies growing longer, the Court are asking themselves if it is one of them, or all of them . . .

A Strange Place in Time: The White Palace Awakens is letterpress printed from photopolymer plates on Arches Text mouldmade paper and digitally typeset in Adobe InDesign using Poliphilus and Blado types. The illustrations are by Eveline Koeppen of Leipzig, Germany. The book design is by Laura J. Thomson of Doppelganger Press with the assistance of Steve Miller and Anna Embree of the University of Alabama Book Arts Program. The main edition is quarter bound in Asahi crimson Japanese silk book cloth and handmade
pastepaper using a French groove style binding structure. The edition is signed by the author and numbers seventy-five books with an additional twenty-five printers proofs.

A Strange Place In Time: The White Palace Awakens [178 pp, 6” x 9”] is available at $260,
plus $5 shipping and handling for US addresses. International buyers please add $30 extra
shipping for orders. Please expect two weeks for delivery.

Alyx J. Shaw, is a Canadian writer who has produced a work of fantasy fiction in three volumes originally published for free on her website Ex Libris. The online form and community of A Strange Place in Time, has inspired me to publish using a variety of modern and traditional printing techniques. Through the course of publishing all three volumes of the book, the techniques used will become a progression into the past from a combination of modern printing techniques and materials to a fully handmade traditional letterpress work.
